Hi Fiona
I don't know what magnitude it is right now but its the 2nd brighest object in the nighter sky after our moon! In the evening if you don't see clouds, it will really stand out in the sky. currently its so bright as its in the gibbous stage...

Hi,

According to my planetarium it stands at -4.0mag.. note there's a (-) there! :D

Yes it is the second brightest thing in the night sky. I saw it on friday night, it was so bright it stood out from the night sky.. very "chio", if i should say

?? actually, stars generall don't flash colours by itself. its the effect of out atmosphere that causes it. in anycase, I have yet to see a star that does not twinkle in Singapore...some would beg to differ but really...those "stars" that do not twinkle turns out to be Saturn or Jupiter!

Hi,
If it is near Orion, then it is the brightest star - Sirius... else it would be the second brightest star - Canopus (the old man star).

By the way, it is quite coincidences that the three brightest stars(Sirius, Canopus and Alpha Centauri) are in the south hemisphere and the next three brightest stars(Arcturus, Vega and Capella) are in the north hemisphere...

Happy Stargazing... :D
