Amateur Radio Astronomy

Post by Tachyon »

Just wondering if anyone in Singapore/Asia is into amateur radio astronomy?

I had ideas on how to build one in the past, but gave up because of the large size necessary for the antenna.

Yep. That and also some knowledge of electronics. Not easy as just buying a telescope and fit it with accessories!

Here's a simple model of my concept.
The antenna array is optimised for 21cm.

Each pannel is made of 2 acrylic pieces sandwiching a piece of lead. There are grooves on the acrylic to thread the wire.

And what is the length of each panel?

1 meter. Means the whole array has over 3900 individual antennae connected in series. But this diameter doesn't translate into alot of resolving power.

i think if someone really built that, he'll probably be visited by police to find out what he's doing with such a large dish. Security has been alot tighter since 9-11 and the discovery of terrorist cells in Singapore.

but what can we get from radio astronomy? weird crackling noise?

Well......you could connect some sort of voltmeter to your antenna. Measure the changes in magnitude of stars in radio....sort of.

Anyone wants to build a dish count me in. i have some idea on how to create a big cheap parabolic dish.
