Solar Filter

Post by coolcat »

Hi all. I'm thinking of viewing the sun. Of the solar filters which ones will allow me to see the sun flares & sun spots? Only Hydrogen-Alpha? How about Baadar filters?

I know Baadar comes in sheets and need a little DIY. What about H-A filters?

I need something that's very safe to use. Got kids in the house so I don't want any accidents.

(Sorry! A lot of questions to ask. Pls bear with a newcomer :P )

Forget about the H-A filter. I just found out how much those will cost. Any other alternatives besides Baadar filter?

Baadar is the cheapest and it is also safe. I have one, only drawback is sun appears neutral white instead of a more pleasing orange. Thousand oaks is also very good.

Hi,
You can buy those ready make Thousand Oaks glass type solar filter from Astro Scienitific Centre, but be prepare to pay at least S$250 for it.

I use Thousand Oaks Solar filter (A4 sheet type) for my 6" Newtonian... It work out fine and also very safe. Anyway, you need to check for scratches or holes before you use any solar filter even the it is glass type.

You can check out the image that I take through them: http://www.singastro.org/album_pic.php?pic_id=227

Have a nice day.
