Milky Way at East Coast Park by Justin Ng

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum as the above bunch of photos got me curious on trying out my hand at astrophotography. One question I have is how do you find the Milky Way in our skies? I tried using the google sky map app last night, do I just look for Sagittarius? And is the Milky Way present in our skies on most nights?

Hi Matthew. Welcome to the forum.

The easy way - install the free "Planets" app for android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... um.planets . Milky Way is shown in this app.

Another way that does not require battery power:

- Look at this annotated Milky Way image from Colorado Mountain College : http://ontariostargazing.ca/wp-content/ ... summer.jpg
- Learn how to identify Scorpius (especial the tail portion) and Sagittarius (the teapot spout portion).
- The thickest part of the Milky Way is between this two area.
- Then mentally extend and trace the rest of the milky way from this thickest part.
