CCD vs Film? Lots of time vs no patience? Alright, this is your place to discuss all the astrophotography what's and what's not. You can discuss about techniques, accessories, cameras, whatever....just make sure you also post some nice photos here too!

Sun taken with Borg 76 and Solarscope SF 50 filter at 5:40pm. In this picture, West is pointing upwards. Simply rotate this picture anticlockwise by 90 degree to point North in its right direction. A reference picture can be found at http://spaceweather.com/images2011/17ju ... elic27rdc6.

Sunspots 1250, 1251 and 1254 are clearly visible.[php]

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. Embedding your large-size version here:

Sorry guys, I still couldn't figure out how to turn on HTML :(

Thanks Gary for embedding the picture.

Alternatively you have visit pbase to see the original size image:

http://www.pbase.com/yltansg/image/136493056/original

The challenge is to have both the prominences and disk details in one image, without having to cheat (i.e. process prominences and disk details in separate picture and put them together).

Enjoy and give me your comments.

Cheers.

I have added some more pictures taken this evening (18Jul11), just before sunset. This time, a B/W and colour images. First let's get our orientation of the Sun. North is pointing to 3O'clock position. There is a new sunspot 1257 emerging at the 5 O'clock position (i.e. about East position). According to spaceweather.com it poses a growing threat for C-class solar flare. The other thing I am observing is the differential rotation of the Sun (20+ days per revoluation near equator and about 40days per revoluation near poles). Will be monitoring by observing the rate of sunspot movement :)

Image

Now a closer look at 1257. Can you see the prominences on the limb below 1257.

Alfred, hope I am not seeing things but even after logging in to see the thread, your latest two images are "question marks"... got to ensure that the URL is between the "img" tags.
