Thats strange. Considering that they recently set up an observatory in Langkawi island and had established a full-fledged research facility there, wouldn't it be more prudent to enhance/develop the facilities there instead; considering the limited human resources and interest available? Besides, Johor is quite high developed, the light pollution will be a serious problem for any observatory sited there.
Well, dont look down on them.Langkawi observatory do turn out some good solar photo (submitted to spaceweather)and that proof that they do use their equipment whereas we have one of the best--daystar solar filter--and it just there doing nothing.
it comes down to what VinSnr said.. it does not matter which country makes it, to run and make a good use of the facilities you need people genuinly interested in that subject.. Hopefully this research facility will attract some bright ppl.
i was just in Malacca this past week (at a government agency...) and there's a planetarium right across the street! I never did get to have a look inside though (or even if it's open).
