an eyepiece is for you to look through, without it, i dont think you can see any images as i have tried it. the focal length of an eyepeice together with your telescope determines your total magnification of what you are going to see. Focal Length of Telescope / Focal length of Eyepiece.

E.g

1500mm Telescope / 20mm Eyepiece = 75x magnification

A telescope has 2 major components : the optical tube assembly (Shortform = OTA) and the eyepiece . the telescope cant show anything without the eyepiece at the end.

Popular designs of OTA include :
refractors
reflectors (also known as Newtonians cos Isaac newton had the idea of using a mirror instead of lens to collect light)
Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT)
Maksutov-CAssegrain (MCT)

Popular design of eyepieces:
Plossl
Orthoscopic
Ultra Wide Angle (UWA)
