Hmm.. this topic is explored in Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" series of novels. Depends on how you see it, yes I think Scientists are now the new priests. Science has gotten into such a complicated stage that whatever they research on, is probably too tough for laymen to understand.. so we just take it as "the truth"...
Stargazing ... is an excuse to stay up past bedtime that never fails!
