Weird Moon from recent Mersing trip ;P

Post by rcj »

Hi all,
Here is a recent picture of the moon taken during the 3-5th March Mersing trip, using the D70 and Pentax 3-inch refractor at eyepiece projection using XP8. Notice it looks weird? ;P

Is the internal reflection coming from the XP8 of the Pentax 75?

notice it too. unlikely the XP8. could be due to D70 housing.

Try it again tonight on the moon. I suspect it's due to the water condensation from the aircon?

hi Tachyon,
it was taken in mersing, and both nights were quite dry. There are no sources of air-conditioning, nor the camera was chilled prior. The image was taken to bring out the earthshine. The almost full moon would have little effect on this tonight, but if there is oppotunity again, I would try it out again.

Hi,
IMHO, I think this may be cause by the internal reflection of the eyepiece's eye lens and the D70 CCD. The light hit the D70 CCD (CCD surface is quite reflective) and reflect back to the eyepiece's eye lens. Then the reflected light that hit the eyepiece's eye lens reflect back to the CCD again causing internal reflection. Normally, this shouldn't be a problem, but the bright side of the Moon is quite bright and in order to bring out the earthshine, your exposure must be quite long. Thus, causing the internal reflection problem.

Anyway, I think some camera lens not design for digital SLR also got this problem when use on a digital SLR.

Have a nice day.

I think Weixing is right. Although another suspect could be the clear filter in front of the CCD if you have not removed it.
