Astronomy Blunders ?

Post by wei »

hi everyone. Is there any silly things that you all did during your observing sessions or anyother times alike? Please share your experience with everyone else.
Me, for example, was balancing my refractor on my EQ mount. When i finally found the center-of-gravity, i quickly took my counter-weights away to keep. However, forgetting that i did not lock the RA, the mount lost balance :violent:

Hi,

I was wondering why you need to keep the counter-weight?? You don't put counter-weight after balancing your scope??

Have a nice day.

I think he is setting up not for observation but merely just to find and maybe mark the position of his counterweight. Next time, just follow the mark or position for quick setup.

yes i was just merely marking the position of my counterweight, and in a haste forgot everything about physics.
As i was saying, wanted to find out what kind of silly mistakes you guys encountered before. :D

the stupidest thing i can remember doing was when i was a student, on an intro class at the observatory in Lembang (Bandung), i accidentally shined a flashlight at one of the big OTA's that was in the middle of an observation.
i dont know if i ruined the observation or not.
this was a long long time ago....

Hi,
I remembered this bu bu of mine late 2003 When I started interested in Astromony.Ric was introduced me to Yahoo.Singastro which ACC had a tread on CSN mobilisation.
Since it was Saturday, I rushed to Dempsey for first time hoping to see some stars since I did not have a scope then.Upon arrival at the site, there was not no one there. :(
I thought I went to wrong place. Upon checking posting again, then I realised that the posting was for Friday, the nite before.
What a joke?

Astro Blunders

Hi ,

I can never forget the real "ASTRONOMICAL BLUNDER" I did during my last Mersing trip in first week Feb .

Before returning from obs site. I kept the accessory box and camping chair on top of my car and drove back. After about 500 meters I heard a sound coming from the rear , still did not stop to check and drove off.

Following items lost.

Meade 26 mm SP, Vixen 13 mm LWA, 2 inch 30 mm WA EP, Meade reticle, Home made heater, Computer power cable, two pocket flash lights, two compass, headlamp, tools, camping chair etc..

No hope of recovering these now.
