Sedili Time Lapse

Post by jiahao1986 »

Hi folks,

Followed rlow (thanks for giving us the lift man) to Sedili on Aug 6 for some DSO obbing. Sky was in general clear after 10pm though still quite hazy. With the almighty 15inch dob we managed to spot many DSOs. Classic ones like the Ring, Dumbell, Veil, Swan etc. simply look spectecular through the monster scope. We even managed to spot the infamous and very dim interacting galaxy group, the Stephen's Quintet! Amazing power of the scope! A great bonus object was comet Garrad, with a very obvious tail. Seeing the movement of the comet over a few hours was also fun.

Below was a time lapse taken with my 5D mkii and 15mm fisheye. Note the three of us busy with the dob on the lower left, and the TASOS group busy imaging further away.

Clear skies please...

That's a nice time-lapse Jiahao!
What was the camera's setting for the frames, e.g. ISO speed, lens f-ratio, exposure time? Tks.

I've not looked through RLow's new 15" Dob yet. Hope to do so soon! Looks like it's becoming legendary.

About the comet, how long was its tail compared with the main body? Could you estimate its total length in arcseconds, e.g. compared with the width of Jupiter (40 arcsecs). Also, was any colour seen?

Very smooth time lapse of the milky way. Was that light pollution from the town?

Hi Gavin,

Thanks for the kind words. The settings are ISO 3200, f/2.8, 30s at 1 sec interval between frames.

Do join rlow in one of his Sedili trips. The scope is indeed legendary!

The comet's tail we saw is around 10 arc minute long, around 3 times the size the coma, which is around 3-4 arc minute in diameter. I didn't really see any green tone though I was expecting to. Sky condition was hindering the scope from delivering it's full potential, otherwise I'm sure we could see more details.
Clear skies please...

Hi shirox (sorry forgot your real name...),

Thanks for the compliments! The light dome you see is the light pollution from SG and JB, huge isn't it...

Hey man,

Actually not many people were there. Beside the four of us in Richard's group, there was kochu, and another 3 from TASOS.
Clear skies please...

Nice time lapse Jiahao

Though those clouds spoiled my imaging Pelican. Just after I wound up at 3.30 , sky became quite clear.

Beautiful time-lapse! Give me Milky Way skies + some haze + some light dome anytime over observing in cloudy Singapore right inside the light dome! lol :)

Looking forward to time-lapse with panning in your future attempts. Keep up the good work!

Hi Kochu,

Sad to hear that your Peclian shot got spoiled. After we went back to our room and showered, the sky cleared up again quite nicely. Damn, I hate Merphy's law...
Clear skies please...
