Astro scientific? Harlequin? McGill? StarMatrix?

Choose one.

Or else you can get it off astromart, ebay, amazon and all those websites.

Hi,
Some question:
1) What is your budget??
2) What is your primary interest (Planet, DSO or wide view)??
3) What is the maximum weight you think you can handle??
4) Do you travel far away for observation... meaning do you need portability(NA if you drive).

Have a nice day.

Take a look at the Astronomy FAQ on the home page.

http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=32

Drop by the AstroFest 2004 which is in the planning stage currently. It will showcase the common scope types and let you decide the scope type and aperture.

Hi
Your dilemma is typical of all beginners.
The FAQ that was referred to by Starlord is quite extensive and you will get an idea of what to look out for and what may suit you. Be aware that the author has some misgivings on china-made scopes which is not necessarily true.
If you can , either buy or borrow the VERY VERY good beginner book "The Backyard Astronomers Guide"Dickinson and Dyer.
Its an excellent reference cum introductory book.
Then when you are ready, get yourself Stars and Planets by Ian Ridpath for a quick guide to the main constellations. HIGHLY recommended.

Join weixing or SP for their sessions where you can touch and feel the scopes and get opinions from others.

cheers

Hi,
I'm afraid that with that amount, it quite difficult to get a decent scope.

I will recommend you to get a bino... ariefm71 is selling a large 20x80 bino at a very good price. See the link: http://www.singastro.org/viewtopic.php?t=1010

You will also need to buy a good camera tripod with slow motion control head and a bino adapter. I think it may just fit your S$550 budget.

Have a nice day and good luck.
