Binoculars (8 by 40) with green coating is suitable & not very expensive.Ruby coated binos are supposed to be less suitable for astronomical purposes.

May I suggest you start with Orion constellation which is visible now , easy to locate & different coloured stars eg orange & blue.Interesting objects like Orion nebula & Pleiades can be seen with your bino.
Also the brightest star in the heavens Sirius is just nearby.

you can pop by AstroScientific at the Science Centre. Albert is usually very keen to guide you if he is not busy and he does have a few lower end scopes selling for less than $400. He has a large collection that you can see and feel before buying.
Also can check out our vendors too although I don't think they sell any in the lower range. (do confirm as I could be wrong!)

Hi leechriz,

You can take a look at the scopes at Astroscientific but do resist the urge to buy it on the spot. Go along for any obs session with the more experienced members to learn about the scope types and characteristics.

Then search the archives in the Buy and Sell section of Singastro. You may just save a bundle on used scopes in good condition.

Do shop around and compare prices before you buy.
