Stellarium is indeed one of my favourite software all these while. It helped me a lot in learning the constellations
On the question about photography ethics, I think it all depends on the intention of the publisher... there is a lot of difference between enhancing a photo (such as use of Gaussian blur to smooth out distracting background artefacts) and falsifying a photo (such as adding a 'new comet discovered' by 'painting' the false object over an original photo).
